    Synopsis

A stunning and provocative new novel by the internationally celebrated author of The Blind Assassin, winner of the Booker Prize

Margaret Atwood's new novel is so utterly compelling, so prescient, so relevant, so terrifyingly-all-too-likely-to-be-true, that readers may find their view of the world forever changed after reading it.

    Annotation

Shortlisted for the 2003 Man Booker Prize.

    USA Today

A less talented writer might have preached. But Atwood entices with deadpan humor and wry asides from Snowman's sunbaked subconscious, commenting on the fall of civilization. — Jakie Pray

    Biography

Accomplished in equal measure as a poet, novelist, and essayist, Margaret Atwood is as much a dazzling storyteller as she is a committed feminist. Her novels and stories educate as much as they entertain, but without ever veering into dogmatism.

In Margaret Atwood's novel, Oryx and Crake, the lonely Snowman believes that the he is the last human being left on Earth. This book peeks at Snowman's thoughts and past to create a mystery that keeps the reader's attention. His past is full of parental problems and genetic engineering. In the book's present, Snowman is in a state of seclusion where, like the Lord of the Flies, creates a question man versus nature and civilizations. The book brings up ethical questions that may not suit all types of people. If you're interested in cloning, genetic engineering and post apocalyptical civilizations, then this book is for you.

January 26, 2010: The first three chapters of Oryx and Crake has taken a new look on the cliche of a post-apocalyptic tale. Margaret Atwood takes on difficult ethical questions such as cloning, cannibalism, and genetic engineering overall. The story starts out with our mysterious protagonist Jimmy/Snowman as he fights to survive while questioning his own humanity. With the use of flashbacks, Atwood gives us glipses of Snowman's past and insites into our lead characters mind. Oryx and Crake is a new take on classic survival tales such as Cast Away, Robinson Crusoe, The Road, and I Am Legend. If you're looking for a book that raises ethical and philisophical questions as well as paint an entertaining and mysterious post-apocalyptic backdrop then Oryx and Crake is for you.
