This book provides a comprehensive overview of the various assessment tools used for the evaluation of the orthopedic patient. Now in its third edition, it contains some very important changes from the previous editions, namely greater organization of the evaluation process, additional photographs, and additional charts to guide the reader during an orthopedic assessment. The primary objective is to provide the reader with a systematic approach to the performance of a neuromuscular assessment and to understand the reasons behind the many different aspects of the assessment. The book is intended for the practicing clinician in an outpatient setting, including physical therapists, athletic trainers, physician assistants, and primary care physicians. The organization of the text also makes it ideal for students in these disciplines, providing adequate explanations for procedures, as well as guidance for the musculoskeletal evaluation process. Several features have been included in this third edition, making it much better organized and more comprehensive. The more common assessment tools are highlighted to better direct the reader. Tables have been added to assist in clinical reasoning. Functional evaluation tools are again provided, along with additional photographs to support the text. Finally, a chapter focusing on pre-participation screening has been included. This textbook will make an excellent addition to the shelf of practicing clinicians involved in orthopedic practice. The improved organizational structure also makes it better suited for students in physical therapy, athletic training, and physician assistant programs. It is very comprehensive, covering all regionaltopics as well as neuromuscular screening, neurotension testing, and functional assessment as they pertain to the orthopedic patient. The author should be commended for a wonderful new edition to an already effective textbook.
