This new two-volume book describes surgical techniques for operative procedures within the field of otolaryngology-head and neck surgery. The purpose is to describe modern operative techniques in otolaryngology-head and neck surgery and to augment this with detailed information about preoperative planning and postoperative care. This is in accordance with the philosophy of the editors, primarily from the University of Pittsburgh Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, that preoperative planning and postoperative care are as important to the outcome of the procedure as the surgical procedure itself. According to the editors, the audience for this book is otolaryngologists and otolaryngology residents. The content will be mainly of interest to this audience, and the text is appropriately written at a level which assumes some degree of knowledge and experience within the field. The principal editor is a well-respected and experienced individual in otolaryngology, and he lends a high level of credibility to the book. Although the editors are primarily from University of Pittsburgh, a well-qualified staff in itself, other highly respected individuals have been asked to contribute to the text. The book is beautifully illustrated with a combination of pertinent-black and-white photographs and diagrams illustrating key operative points. Chapters are well-referenced and include classic papers as well as up-to-date references. Each chapter is comprehensive yet concisely written and provides a good review prior to any anticipated procedure. In addition to describing surgical approaches and techniques, each chapter features sections on patient selection, preoperative evaluation andplanning, postoperative management, and potential pitfalls and complications. This extremely well-written, comprehensive text is easy to use and is highly recommended as an addition to the library of any practicing otolaryngologist or otolaryngology resident.

Reviewer:Rakesh K Chandra, MD (Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine)
Description:This comprehensive atlas of otolaryngology-head and neck surgery, organized into sections by anatomic region, is a two-volume update of a book originally published over 10 years ago.
Purpose:It provides detailed descriptions of the entire operative and perioperative process for the full spectrum of otolaryngic procedures. Some of these may be basic and common (such as fine needle aspiration) , while others are highly specialized (such as cochlear implantation) . The book certainly meets its objectives of detailing a comprehensive approach to the entire gamut of issues that may be encountered before, during, and after surgery.
Audience:Because of its broad scope, the book may be useful at all levels: student, resident, general otolaryngologist, and tertiary practitioner. As with the prior edition, the authors are faculty at the University of Pittsburgh who have amassed legendary experience across their respective subject areas.
Features:Given the array of topics and the prowess of authors, this book fulfills its calling to stand as the authoritative comprehensive atlas in our specialty. The field has undergone significant technological evolution is just the last 10 years, and the book meets this challenge by incorporating updated content in areas such as cochlear implantation, bone anchored hearing aids, endoscopic skull base surgery (pituitaries, CSF leak repair) , and endoscopic phonosurgery. This edition has been markedly augmented with color illustrations and photographs, a significant enhancement from the previousversion.
Assessment:This is, indeed, the current authority among operative atlases in otolaryngology-head and neck surgery. Perhaps the greatest strength of both this and the earlier version is the style and format. The authors not only describe operative techniques, but also incorporate critical details of preoperative assessment, presurgical planning, and postoperative care. At all of these levels, this edition is rich with all of the necessary technologic details, high quality illustrations, and more. It should be on every otolaryngologist's shelf.
