"Doody's Core Titles 2009."
Reviewer:Bruce A. Bennett, MD (Regions Hospital)
Description:This is a comprehensive anatomic and technical description of over 100 general surgical operative procedures. The first author is an academic surgeon and professor of anatomy and the second author is a professional anatomist.
Purpose:Consistent with the previous editions, this book provides a concise reference to the relevant operative anatomy, technical aspects, and potential pitfalls of bread-and-butter general surgical procedures.
Audience:Originally created for general surgery residents and medical students, it serves as a reference for general surgeons at all levels.
Features:Organization is by anatomic regions. New tables at the beginning of each chapter outline steps and procedures, hallmark anatomic complications, and a list of structures. Tables provide a concise procedural overview and set the basis for the detailed anatomic navigation to follow. Inconsistent internal cross-referencing is used on occasion. The text is augmented by newly colored line drawings, but would be better served with more detailed drawings. Technical points arise from mainstream techniques. The scope has been enriched by the addition of new authors and procedures, including FAST, breast, laparoscopic, and sentinel lymph node procedures. Online access to the full text with illustrations is relatively effortless and quite functional. The book also includes an appendix of common surgical instruments and a functional index.
Assessment:This is a needed update of the 2003 edition that expands content without deletions to reflect contemporary developments in generalsurgical techniques. Line drawings are enhanced by the addition of color, but remain short of their potential. Online full-text access increases the utility of this authoritative general surgery reference standard.
