Synopsis

Technology Available

Extensive WEBSITE - This text has its own interactive website for both the student and instructor. (Http://www.prenhall.com/heizer) FREE CD-ROM - This disk, packaged with every copy of the book, includes free software and other valuable resources to help students get more out of this course. Contents of CD-ROM:

  • Excel OM - new Excel add-ins that allow users to create spreadsheets to model and solve problems in Operations Management and Management Science, respectively, using standard Excel. Developed by Professor Howard Weiss of Temple University, this program is easy to install and very easy to use. After selecting a topic from the pull-down menu, users need only to fill in the data and Excel will display and graph (where appropriate) the results. Since Excel illustrates the actual formulas used to make calculations, this becomes an "open" or "symbolic" approach in which students can observe and even modify formulas. This software is provided free on the CD-ROM packaged with this book or can be downloaded from the website.
  • Powerpoint slides - provide reinforcement to the main points of each chapter and allow students to review the material.
  • Chapter Quizzes and Practice Problems - allow students to quiz their understanding of each chapter and practice solving homework problems and test questions.
  • EXTEND simulation program - a student version of the Extend simulation package, developed by Imagine That, Inc.. This package will be complete with tutorial, users manual, pre-built models, a variety of libraries, and save and print capabilities.

NEW - Two of the best student software pages are available with the text.

  • POM for Windows is a user-friendly, easy-to-use educational software for solving quantitative problems. Developed by Howard Weiss at Temple University, this software is the most popular package offered for operations management course. It can be packaged with the text for a reasonable price.
  • Excel OM spreadsheets.

Features:

In the sixth edition, Heizer (business administration, Texas Lutheran U., Seguin, Texas) and Render (operations management, Rollins College, Winter Park, Florida) have added six sections of quantitative modules that cover decision-making tools, linear programming, transportation models, waiting-line models, learning curves, and simulation, and reworked the remaining chapters to emphasize new trends, especially; strategy, global operation, service operations, and the impact of the internet. The body of the text gives an overview of the subject, using numerous case studies, including an integrated running case study of Southwestern U., to provide examples from the real world.
