Synopsis

Six shots. Five dead. One heartland city thrown into a state of terror. But within hours the cops have it solved: a slam-dunk case. Except for one thing. The accused man says: You got the wrong guy. Then he says: Get Reacher for me. And sure enough, from the world he lives in - no phone, no address, no commitments - ex—military investigator Jack Reacher is coming. In Lee Child's astonishing new thriller, Reacher's arrival will change everything - about a case that isn't what it seems, about lives tangled in baffling ways, about a killer who missed one shot - and by doing so gives Jack Reacher one shot at the truth....

The New York Times - Janet Maslin

Mr. Child's idea of heroism has nihilism around the edges but a fierce, fighting spirit at its core. In marked contrast to the brooding figures who otherwise dominate contemporary detective stories, Reacher is not one for self-doubt. His is a two-fisted decency. But Mr. Child also gives him amazing powers of deduction, a serious conscience and the occasional touch of tenderness. It's a wildly improbable mixture, one that can't be beat.

July 06, 2005: Child has the ability to bring Jack Reacher to life with astounding realism. Jack's enigmatic character makes him a favorite hero. One Shot is the most recent enthralling installment into this straight arrow, true grit, right & resolute character. In One Shot, Jack is an ex- soldier's enemy yet, that soldier has so much respect for Reacher that he calls upon Jack to right a wrong. That is what Jack Reacher does: he rights wrongs. And that character trait is very winsome to readers. We root for Jack and his 'righteous kills', because he is the epitome of justice, even though what is ?just? may not be legal. One Shot is a riveting and gripping read. Bravo for Child in that he has kept Reacher so dynamic for so long!. Question is, how many more installments can Child provide without Jack Reacher maxing out and becoming a ?stale? character?
