    Synopsis

I'm Jaz Parks. My boss is Vayl, born in Romania in 1744. Died there too, at the hand of his vampire wife, Liliana. But that's ancient history. For the moment Vayl works for the C.I.A. doing what he does best—assassination. And I help. You could say I'm an Assistant Assassin. But then I'd have to kick your ass.

Our current assignment seemed easy. Get close to a Miami plastic surgeon named Assan, a charmer with ties to terrorism that run deeper than a buried body. Find out what he's meeting with that can help him and his comrades bring America to her knees. And then close his beady little eyes forever. Why is it that nothing's ever as easy as it seems?

    Publishers Weekly

Rardin fuses spy girl with vampire slayer in this entertaining but derivative debut. Jasmine "Jaz" Parks, a martial artist turned vampire-hunting government agent, is assigned to protect top-notch operative Vayl, a 300-year-old vampire on the side of the good guys. As Vayl helps Jaz to hone her supernatural abilities and she tries to keep from falling for his Romanian charm, they track down a dirty senator in cahoots with Mohammed Khad Abn-Assan, a terrorist who's making plans for a "Red Plague" spread through vampire-to-human contact. Rardin delivers all the paranormal touches that fans of Hamilton, Harris and Whedon enjoy, and Jaz's jittery narration amuses, but the fang-filled plot, replete with action licks and paranormal theatrics, will have trouble standing out in this overcrowded field. October 10, 2009: Wow, I learned a lot from this book. The first thing I learned from this book is that a sense of humor is a good thing to have if you are a CIA agent partnered with a vampire, and your job is to hunt bad guys especially bad vampires. Jaz vaguely reminds me of maybe a female James Bond, not because she is a man whore but because she has cool toys and kicks ass.

Jaz vaguely reminds me of maybe a female James Bond, not because she is a man whore but because she has cool toys and kicks ass.

The relationship between Jaz and her partner/boss Vayl is quite interesting. Of course there is the required sexual tension but that doesn't stop Jaz from enjoying a kiss with someone else to the point of obsession though.

One of the things I like most about this book is at the back of the Ms. Rardin has a section where she "interviews" Jaz after the end of the book. Quite a good piece of tongue in cheek to me. All in all this was an enjoyable read for me, so much so that I went and bought the next book to start as soon as I finish the other two books I am reading right now.

September 15, 2009: This is a light, fluffy, sanitized clone of Hamilton's Anita Blake series. Vampires in contemporary society: Check. Cute girl always underestimated despite being super-tough: Check. Girl has ambiguous unexplained supernatural powers: Check. Mysterious, powerful, and handsome vampire partner: Check. Working for/assisting government agency to keep baddies under control: Check.

The only real differences seem to be related to target audience and style - it seems to be almost teen-targeted. While Hamilton never shies from explicit sex and violence, Rardin (at least in this first book) rarely ventures beyond a quick smooch and the baddies go poof rather than leaving inconvenient bodies laying around. Throw in a relatively short lengith, a dose of pop-culture references, some snarky commentary, and a huge dues-ex machina and you end up with a Hamilton-esque book suitable for quick reading on the beach without either having to engage your brain or getting dirty looks from passers-by.

I Also Recommend: The Laughing Corpse (Anita Blake Vampire Hunter Series #2), Guilty Pleasures (Anita Blake Vampire Hunter Series #1).
