      Synopsis

With the able assistance of Thing 1 and Thing 2 -- and a fleet of Rube Goldbergian vehicles -- the Cat in the Hat examines the various parts of plants, seeds, and flowers; basic photosynthesis and pollination; and
      seed dispersal.

      Children's Literature

Quite a lot of data is packed into this early reader book about flowering plants. Narrated by The Cat in the Hat, the rhyming text and illustrations keep the spirit of Dr. Seuss alive. The text takes complex scientific information and breaks it down into more digestible pieces. However, the material can be overwhelming for young readers because much ground is covered at a quick pace. Young readers will encounter many new vocabulary words, such as pollen, photosynthesis, carbon dioxide and embryo. Guidance from caretakers and teachers is necessary to aid in the understanding of this book. Children are likely to have many, many questions about what they read here. The book represents an impressive effort to engage young readers with scientific concepts and the natural world. A glossary and index are provided at the back of the book, as is a list of additional books about the subject matter. This title is one in "The Cat in the Hat's Learning Library" series. 2001, Dr. Seuss Enterprises/Random House, $11.99 and $7.99. Ages 5 to 8. Reviewer:Jeanne K. Pettenati
