Description:This is the second edition of a book on the fundamental anatomy and physiology of the human eye. The first edition was published in 1999.
Purpose:This book not only describes the various structures of the human eye, but also explains how these structures and tissues interact and function together to produce vision. Common refractive and ocular conditions are also included. There are very few books on ocular anatomy written at this level, making this a very worthwhile contribution.
Audience:Appropriately, the book is directed at ophthalmic and optometric technicians and assistants, nurses, sales representatives, and anyone interested in learning more about the eye.
Features:It begins with the embryonic development of the eye and the surrounding structures that support it, but the majority of the book is focused on describing the various components that comprise the eye itself, systematically going from the front towards the back. During the various lessons of anatomy, special attention is paid to areas that are associated with common ocular disorders such as glaucoma. This allows students to better visualize these disorders and how they affect the eye. Key points begin each chapter, while definitions of ocular disorders end them. Overall, the illustrations are of good quality and appropriate for helping readers learn the material. However, the use of black-and-white rather than color images sometimes makes it hard to visualize some aspects of the eye.
Assessment:This primer is highly recommended for students or anyone interesting inlearning about the human eye. It does not get bogged down in complicated or confusing terminology, but instead offers a basic, yet fairly comprehensive introduction to the human eye. New information in this edition justifies replacing the previous one. Because of its format, it is enjoyable to read and makes learning about the structures of the eye interesting and memorable.
