Purpose:This book serves as a reference for nursing students, practitioners/clinicians, and educators who have an interest in the practice of occupational health in varied settings. It presents thought-provoking ideas and serves to stimulate the practitioner to consider innovations in the field. Thus, the author's objectives are noteworthy and timely.
Audience:The book is written for nursing students and occupational health nurses and practitioners as well as educators. The editor is very credible and she has gathered an impressive list of contributors who knowledgeable about occupational nursing in the U.K.
Features:Since the field of occupational health is changing rapidly, this book discusses the changing role of the occupational health nurse and introduces the increasing need for nurses to be involved with management of occupational health and safety services as well as policy setting and research. The author presents timely information concerning occupational health and safety legislation, disability, and the important role of the nurse in health promotion, diseaseprevention and the rehabilitation of the employee to improve return to work. This book provides an important resource for nurses in the U.K., but as an American educator and researcher, I know this book will serve as a meaningful addition to my library.
Assessment:This second edition provides an important contribution, particularly as an expansion of the first edition. Many of the chapters parallel and complement the main textbook on occupational health nursing compiled by Rogers, Occupational Health Nursing: Concepts and Practice (W.B. Saunders, 1994).
