James Aiman

This is a comprehensive textbook of obstetrics that attempts (and largely succeeds) to become a single source reference for information about normal and problem pregnancies. The purpose of the book is to provide a broad knowledge base in obstetrics for those who care for pregnant women. This is a worthy objective, but one that is difficult to accomplish in a single volume. Nonetheless, the objectives have been met to an admirable degree. This will be a useful and informative reference for anyone who provides medical care to pregnant women. The authors are recognized authorities and qualified to write about their subjects. The book has an abundance of tables, graphs, and line drawings, with a few photographs. The number of illustrations is appropriate, and they are included judiciously to illustrate points that would be less comprehensible with text only. A major strength of this book is the extensive bibliography. The table of contents and index are useful. A unique and helpful feature is a list of key points at the end of each chapter. I have one recommendation for the publisher: eliminate the shiny blue cover and dress this book with the elegance it deserves. This is certainly one of the essential references in obstetrics that should be on the shelves of all who practice obstetrics. The writing style is uniformly clear, and the style of the book helps the reader find needed information quickly. The extensive bibliography permits the reader to delve deeper into a subject.
