(Paperback - REV)
Breastfeeding may be natural, but it is not always instinctive. The 20th Anniversary Edition of this classic guide to breastfeeding, beloved by a generation of women, has been completely revised and updated to provide even more practical, reassuring advice and support for today's expectant and nursing mothers. Easy-reference survival guides help identify and resolve problems at each stage. An appendix on drug safety is a unique feature among breastfeeding books.
"Ranked by Lamaze International as one of the ten most important books for new parents, this completely revised edition is full of practical advice and wisdom...a book mothers can rely on and trust."
Most books about breastfeeding are heavy on nursing's mystical rewards and light on actual technique. Huggins, a maternal nurse and professional lactation consultant, corrects the imbalance with a lucid, trouble-shooting guide, in which she points out that while nursing is unquestionably the healthiest, most natural way to feed babies, it is not always blissful for the mother. The author tackles various common and uncommon complaints about breastfeeding from inadequate milk supply, breast pain, engorgement and fussy babies to infections, allergies and breast-milk jaundice that could affect the child. In a chapter on nursing mothers who work outside of the home, Huggins offers an instructive review of breast pumps. Her reassuring, practical suggestions make this book an excellent informational companion. (February)

June 29, 2009: I'm a nursing mother of twins who went back to a demanding job after 3 mos at home with our kids. This book really helped answer most of my questions and gave me tips on making the nursing process easier and more rewarding for both me and my girls. While it didn't have an extensive twin section it provided me with great encouragement, good idea of what to eat and medicing to take or not take, reinforced the knowledge that breastmilk is best and if you keep working hard at it you can do it! The book also helps you figure out what you can do when you go back to work. Also had the help of a lactation consultant who recomended the book for at home help.

May 07, 2009: Having this book was like having a lactation consultant on hand 24/7. I actually never had to call a consultant for help, partly because I got lucky (nursing was relatively easy for me), but mainly because Huggins' book does such an incredible job of explaining how nursing works, and how to "troubleshoot" at different stages. Absolutely indispensable advice for the nursing mom!
