Doody Review Services

Reviewer:Mary Ellen Wurzbach, RN, MSN, PhD (University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh)
Description:The book, which is very aptly titled, discusses the nursing experience with all of its trends, challenges and transitions. This is the fourth edition of a history, trends, and issues in contemporary nursing text.
Purpose:The purpose, according to the authors, is to endow students with an insatiable intellectual curiosity that goes beyond the book. Their hope is that nursing students will be both well informed and motivated to search for additional answers beyond the pages of the book. The objectives are worthy and well met.
Audience:The audience is inferred to be undergraduate nursing students beginning their careers. It might also be of interest to any nurse wanting an overview of the profession's history, trends, and transitions. High school students and pre-nursing students who are interested in nursing as a career could use it as an introductory reference text. The authors have the highest credibility, since they have held prominent positions in high profile nursing organizations.
Features:This very compact and informationally dense book has many outstanding features, including the expertise of the authors. It is composed of five sections beginning with the evolution of nursing, nursing in the healthcare arena, nursing practice, nursing ethics and the law, and concluding with transition into practice. Each chapter ends with key points, study questions, a reference list, and suggested Web sites. There is also a Web site at which updates to the text may be found. The book contains several appendixes that offer information notfound in other texts such as lists of major nursing organizations with names, addresses and Web sites, and short biographies of distinguished nurses from the past.
Assessment:This is an excellent introduction to the nursing experience. As a reference for nurses or as a motivator for high school, pre-nursing, or nursing students, it is exemplary. The author's current and previous professional roles add to the in-depth information. It has numerous features not found in other books, including the history of many nursing milestones. Much effort has gone into providing a succinct overview of nursing as a profession. In addition, the cover art is exceptional. I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in the history, trends, and transitions of the nursing profession.
