    Doody Review Services

Reviewer:Vicki Ann Moss, DNSc, MS, BSN, RN (University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh)
Description:This book provides an overview of communication and communication techniques and ways nurses and nursing students can implement effective communication in therapeutic relationships throughout the lifespan.
Purpose:The purpose is to help nurses and nursing students strengthen their interpersonal and communication skills.
Audience:The audience for this book is student nurses and novice through experienced nurses.
Features:This book's five chapters cover perspectives and principles of therapeutic communication; therapeutic communication techniques; nurse-client interactions: strengthening care partnerships; cultural aspects of communication partnerships; and professional development: leading through effective communication. Each chapter begins with learning objectives and key terms and ends with suggestions for clinical and experiential activities and end-of-chapter questions. Chapters also contain several critical thinking questions related to chapter topics as well as vignettes demonstrating effective communication techniques. Selected Web sites are also included following each chapter.
Assessment:This would be a good beginning text for nursing students, but it also has valuable information for nurses in general who would like to improve on their therapeutic communication both in their interpersonal lives as well as their professional lives. The critical thinking questions would lend themselves well to class discussion and the vignettes are especially helpful in role modeling effective communication techniqueswith clients, families, physicians, and other team members. The lifespan approach and the chapter on culture make this book very timely due to changing societal demographics and the advances in information technology.
