    Synopsis

Journalist Wicker, a religion reporter, recounts her exploration into the increasingly popular trend of magic and mysticism in the US. This is a memoir of her own experiences and anecdotes of people she met in different parts of the country who had interests in voodoo, Wicca, Satanism, hoodoo, werewolves, and vampires. She lists some sources and offers a bibliography. There is no index. Annotation ©2006 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

The Washington Post - Anne Ursu

The book's subtitle is A Curious Tale of How Magic Is Transforming America, but the tale really amounts to how magic transformed Wicker. That's not necessarily an uninteresting project, but the book cannot decide whether it is a "serious journalistic look" or a personal journey; as a result, it ends up being neither. A book about magic should challenge your notions of what is possible, tickle your sense of wonder—leave you…confronted with the hard limits of your philosophy. And while Wicker's book certainly has these moments, they're too distilled to enchant us.

January 01, 2006: This book made a profound impression on me. I'd noticed the growing space of the metaphysical and supernatural at my local BN. Now I know why. Thank you for explaining this! The stories of this journalist's trek were not only a little scary to me, but some of these lives were poignant. Christine Wicker's exploration of America's spirituality is a must read for those who wish to be informed. This fascination - indeed Americans' need - for the paranormal is not going away. I noticed her interview on WGLD in Wisconsin, and several internet interviews that helped expand upon the book's points and assisted me in having more understanding of this important phenomenon.

November 28, 2005: From how blues songs incorporate hoo doo, to vampirish goth parties, and side trips to modern Salem and suburban Florida my trip through America's enchanted world was breathtaking. I've been watching the metaphysical and paranormal sections growing at my favorite B&N, now I know why. I'm keeping this book near at hand for frequent reading.
