    Biography

Jane Austen's delightful, carefully wrought novels of manners remain surprisingly relevant, nearly 200 years after they were first published. Her novels -- Pride and Prejudice and Emma among them -- are those rare books that offer us a glimpse at the mores of a specific period while addressing the complexities of love, honor, and responsibility that still intrigue us today.

January 27, 2010: I do not feel Northanger Abbey is a completed novel. The story itself is wonderful. I fell in love with Catherine and Henry. However, I did not love the parts where the author stepped back and spoke directly to the reader. I felt like it took too much away from the story, especially at the end.

June 29, 2009: While many read Austen for her fantastic whirlwind romances, and dashing heros and heroines, Northanger Abbey in those respects falls short. While the romance between Mr. Tilney and Catherine meets several difficulties, it is rather plain and does not leave us fearing for the success of the relationship. In fact, having read only one other Austen novel, I could guess the plot in it's entirety very shortly into the book.

However, Northanger Abbey does provide quite the satire one would expect from Austen. She often pauses to enlighten the reader on every aspect of novels and novel writing, and provides quite the critique of her companions in the field in addition to her typical cynicism of certain aspects of culture. Her parallels to gothic literature provide for a different sort of novel than the rest of her work.

A short and easy read, but do not expect to fall in love with this Jane Austen.

For a better Austen, but equally short, I recommend Persuasion.

I Also Recommend: Persuasion (Barnes & Noble Classics Series).
