    Synopsis

Though it is the fastest-growing religion in the world, Islam remains shrouded in ignorance and fear for much of the West. In No god but God, Reza Aslan, an internationally acclaimed scholar of religions, explains this faith in all its beauty and complexity. Beginning with a vivid account of the social and religious milieu in which the Prophet Muhammad forged his message, Aslan paints a portrait of the first Muslim community as a radical experiment in religious pluralism and social egalitarianism. He demonstrates how, after the Prophet’s death, his successors attempted to interpret his message for future generations–an overwhelming task that fractured the Muslim community into competing sects. Finally, Aslan examines how, in the shadow of European colonialism, Muslims developed conflicting strategies to reconcile traditional Islamic values with the realities of the modern world, thus launching what Aslan terms the Islamic Reformation. Timely and persuasive, No god but God is an elegantly written account of a magnificent yet misunderstood faith.

The New York Times - William Grimes

Mr. Aslan, an Iranian by birth and a doctoral student in history and religion at the University of California at Santa Barbara, has written a literate, accessible introduction to Islam (or, more accurately Islams), carefully placing its message and rituals in historical context. Complete with a glossary and an annotated bibliography, it could easily serve as a college textbook.

March 16, 2009: An informative history of Islam. Starting in the beginning to modern times, it protrays both the good and dark periods of Islamic History. It is a much more honest assessment of religous history than most Christian books portray.

July 10, 2007: People that pick up this book are making the first step toward having an open mind. It shows they actually want to understand why there is so much controversy surrounding one particular religion. Even still, people are ignorant enough to make wild accusations because of what someone else told them or what they believe should be correct. I am majoring in International Affairs with a minor in Arabic studies and I like the way Aslan broke every word down to the most minute detail. Its very well written, researched, and explained.
