Burdened by Grief, She Hunts a Killer
They never found her sister's body, but Detective Rebecca Montgomery knows her murderer is still out there. In the five months since Danielle went missing, there have been two more brutal abductions. A savage menace stalks the women of San Antonio, and the relentless detective will do anything to find him.
And a Seductive Stranger Shadows Her Every Move
But her latest case—the discovery of a young woman's remains inside the wall of a burned-down theater—plunges Rebecca from her grief into a brand-new nightmare. She soon meets handsome, mysterious Diego Galvan at the crime scene, and his shadowy connections will lead to her first break in both cases. But when Rebecca submits to his considerable powers of seduction, she will leave herself vulnerable to a merciless killer . . . and when he attacks, no one will hear her scream.
In a dynamite debut from Dane, San Antonio Det. Rebecca Montgomery fears the worst when her little sister, Danielle, is abducted during summer break on the Texas Gulf's South Padre Island. Five months later, the discovery of a crime scene saturated with Dani's blood indicates she's been murdered. As more college co-eds go missing, Becca wants to stay on the case, but the department hands her a puzzler involving a young woman's remains found within a wall of the torched Imperial Theater. They belong to Isabel Marquez, who's been missing for almost seven years. Becca finds a surprising ally, and mutual attraction, in Diego Galvan, who works for slimy Hunter Cavanaugh, former owner of the Imperial and a prime suspect. Dane's smooth style, believable characters and intense pacing will remind readers of Lisa Jackson, Lisa Gardner and Tami Hoag. While Dane's debut is being marketed as romantic suspense, it crosses over into plain thriller country: the tight plotting and the male characters are exceptional, bad guys and good. (Apr.)

May 23, 2008: Now, I'm going to be 100% straight-forward and start with the fact that I'm not a huge fan of this genre (crime fiction and romance could both be described as my turn-offs) and would probably never have picked the book up if not for a recommendation from a friend. But this was a novel WELL worth the time I spent reading it. The characters are realistic and easy to like, the plot twists and turns are many. I admit to having been blindsided by what was REALLY going on with the disappearance of all those young girls. The big baddie is sinister enough to send chills down your spine and his lackeys are thuggish enough that you want to shower off after reading about them. Not a straight police procedural, it focuses just as much on the characters as it does on the crimes they investigate, and it does so to good effect. A burgeoning relationship is put to the test when the protagonist can not quite figure out the motives of the bad guy's left hand. And while his motives are not what they appear, they're not what anyone else suspects, either. There are also some scenes that just make you smile (and I will probably spend the rest of my young life pondering a question posed in one such scene: do condoms have expiration dates?). Other scenes make you smile not at their humor but at their sweetness, so this book provides a wonderful combination of gritty crime and action, humor, and sweetness (the latter two frequently being traits all-too-frequently absent from the crime drama genre). Having read this initial offering by Jordan Dane, I'm now absorbed in her second book 'No One Left to Tell' and am eagerly awaiting her next 'No One Lives Forever'. If this debut (and what I've read so far of 'Tell') is any indication, this is an author to watch. I think we'll be hearing a lot about her in the future.

May 05, 2008: Jordan Dane has written a terrific first novel. She has placed intrigue everywhere in this book. I could not find a slow spot while reading this tale of murder that begins with the apparent death of the sister, Danielle, of homicide detective, Rebecca Montgomery. It was as though Becca?s life stopped when that disappearance occurred. Becca couldn?t forget the case. When several other women disappeared under somewhat similar situations, Becca dug too deep and became too personally involved making the detective that was in charge of the investigation, Paul Murphy, very annoyed to the point that he set the Lieutenant on Becca to order her off the case because she had too personal an interest. Santiago did order her off the case but Becca had too much penned up inside of her to forget the disappearance of her sister. He informed Becca that the FBI had entered the case suspecting human trafficking in the area. With their involvement, he didn?t want any detective of his messing up a case. Santiago placed her on a cold case thinking it apart from Becca?s deep-rooted interest. A body was found in the walls of an old theatre downtown and that was now Becca?s assignment, like it or not. The victim had left scratches in the walls around her location showing she had been buried alive and ?No One Heard Her Scream? as she tried unsuccessfully to get out of her concrete grave. While doing her routine investigating, Becca sensed someone shadowing her. Finally a good-looking man approached her and seemingly knew almost everything about Becca, who had no trust of this man but had pretty strong intimate feelings toward him. Diego Galvin?s closeness set Becca?s emotions off and running while trying to maintain the separation that a detective had to observe while working cases. Naturally Becca could not help but see the possibility that Danielle may have vanished in a way that these new found murdered girls had been. Becca continued to dig deep finding those involved through her research and physical hard work. Diego seemed to be ?there? when Becca went to a different witness or suspect to interview them and he also appeared at her home. Becca didn?t know how far she could trust this man. Hunter Cavanaugh owned a huge estate and had several tough bodyguards around. He seemed to control far too much while having an excess of riches. Becca finds out that Diego works for Cavanaugh, which spun her mind deeper in circles while questioning whether his trust was to her or Cavanaugh. Many more characters intertwine in this book but not to the point of confusing the reader. The author does a fantastic job of locating her characters in the proper places and the reader can keep all phases of ?No One Heard Her Scream? straight in their mind. I highly recommend this book. An impossibly hard-to put-down novel.
