(Mass Market Paperback)
Artist Emma Beck returns to her southern hometown to discover the truth about her secret family history. With the help of Mike Ruhl, the contractor she's falling in love with, Emma finds that her legacy is more chilling and unexpected than she ever dreamed. Especially when she starts hearing the whispers late at night.
Romantic suspense twines neatly with the paranormal—and without a single vamp or were-creature—in Lisle's latest, a chilling haunted house mystery that pits a sensible couple against the supernatural. Following the death of her adoptive father, artist Emma Beck leaves Wisconsin and buys a "falling-down, money-pit, creepy-ass" Civil War-era house in Benina, S.C., the hometown of her deceased biological mother. When Emma meets local handyman Mike Ruhl, the attraction between them is instant and strangely evocative, almost as if they already know each other—intimately. Soon, strange noises, unprovoked feelings of terror, a phantom cat and her own overactive libido have Emma spooked, a feeling that only deepens when she tries looking up two women who knew her mother and finds instead two fresh corpses. Lisle keeps pages turning with steamy sex scenes, disturbing revelations and a good old-fashioned ghost story, all building to a white-knuckle conclusion; it's more than enough to please romantic suspense fans and should make a satisfying treat for anyone burned out on bloodsuckers. April 17, 2007: This book was pretty awful. The characters are boring and I didn't care if they lived or died by the end of the book. If you want to read it borrow it from someone or the library, not a keeper.

March 13, 2007: With the death of her adoptive father following that of her adoptive mom, artist Emma Beck decides there is nothing left for her in Wisconsin so she buys a dilapidated Civil War era house in Benina, South Carolina, the hometown of her late biological mother. Her objective is to learn more about her roots. ---------------- However, Emma is stunned by the attraction between her and Mike Ruhl the contractor she hired to fix the house. For some reason it feels as if the duo have already shared intimacy although they just met. Even scarier is the fact he looks identical to a visage she has used in some of her paintings. Emma becomes more frightened by noises and a phantom cat that seems to vanish into thin air. When she goes to meet two friends of her late mom, Emma is horrified to find two corpses. As Mike uncovers documents in the attic, he begins to believe that he and Emma are caught in some sort of action from beyond just like her parents were a few decades ago.----------------- NIGHT ECHOES is a fabulous haunted house (town?) romantic suspense that will elate fans of the supernatural as well as those who like some heat between the lead (human) characters. The story line is fast-paced as Emma and Mike fall in love to the backdrop of increasingly frightening supernatural happenings that both insist cannot occur. Fans of paranormal romantic suspense and horror readers will fully appreciate Holly Lisle?s superb chiller.------------ Harriet Klausner
