Synopsis

The inspiring true story of NFL superstar Tedy Bruschi's amazing comeback from a stroke and return to the game...

New England Patriots linebacker Tedy Bruschi is one of the most popular players in Pats history, playing in four Super Bowls and helping win three. Not long after the third one, in February 2005, Bruschi suffered a stroke. In Never Give Up, Bruschi reveals how he and his family faced the physical and emotional challenges of this life-threatening event and how he managed to rejoin the team just eight months later - earning himself a share of the Comeback Player of the Year Award and full ownership of the prestigious Ed Block Courage Award. From the morning of the stroke and his initial plans to retire through his rehabilitation and ultimate decision to return to the NFL, Bruschi shares his incredible personal journey of recovery, including powerful insights he gained from his experiences as well as the support and encouragement he's given to other stroke victims.

Like Lance Armstrong's bestselling It's Not About the Bike and Dennis Byrd's Rise and Walk, this book will cross over from sports fans to a huge mainstream audience drawn to Bruschi's uplifting, deeply human story of courage and triumph over adversity.

Tedy Bruschi (North Attleboro, MA) has been on the New England Patriots for 11 years, playing in four Super Bowls and winning three. He has also been named to the Pro Bowl. He is an official spokesman for the American Stroke Association. He lives in North Attleboro, Massachusetts, with his wife, Heidi, and their three sons.

Michael Holley (Boston, MA) is the author of the New York Times bestseller, Patriot Reign: Bill Belichick, the Coaches, and the Players Who Built a Champion (0-06-075795-7). A former sports columnist who has worked at the Boston Globe and the Chicago Tribune, he currently co-hosts the Dale & Holley show on Boston's WEEI, the #1-rated sports radio station in America.

Publishers Weekly

Ten days after helping the New England Patriots win the 2005 Super Bowl, 31-year-old middle linebacker Bruschi suffered a debilitating stroke that left his future uncertain. Initially he planned to retire, but as he began to recover, a process that included surgery to repair the hole in his heart that precipitated the stroke, the lure of football beckoned. Bruschi learned much about stroke from doctors who treated him and cleared him to play again. After serious disagreement with his wife, he won her support for his return to the game only eight and a half months after suffering the stroke. His comeback initially met with much skepticism from the media and fans alike, but Bruschi writes that he was determined to overcome the obstacles thrown up by those ignorant of strokes. He also found a new audience of fans: stroke survivors across the country, many who wrote him letters in support. Bruschi, who went on to play the 2005 and 2006 seasons, is planning to be in the lineup this season as well and is now a spokesman for the American Stroke Association. His story is a compelling and convincing one that will appeal to both football fans and those affected by strokes. (Sept.)

January 22, 2008: Teddy Brushi, 245 pound inside linebacker for the Patriots has just been invited to the Pro Bowl. After the game he and his teammates come out with a win. Yet, as a week or so pass the Bruschi family found that in early February they had to face an even bigger challenge? Teddy Bruschi, 245 pound linebacker was having a stroke, ?I think I slept on it wrong? Teddy said to the reaction of numbness in his left side which was caused by the stroke that night. Never Give Up is a powerful and inspiring book, that gives you hope. It states, ?If the worst you have to do is to wake up early? or you have a cut or a scrape, this book makes you feel lucky even if you break a bone. Imagine playing your favorite sport or activity, and being really good and successful at it, and after a great win, you go home a week later and at 2:00 AM your entire left side of your body falls ?asleep?! Then 4-5 hours later, your in a hospital being told you?ve just had a stroke because of a hole in your heart called a PFO that has been there since you?ve been born. Then, the doctors tell you that they will have to do surgery and put a metal circular plate into your heart to cover the hole. Would you think that you would ever be able to play football again? After going through one of the hardest times of his life, Teddy starts his rehab not expecting to go back to the Patriots 'which he ?retired? from a few months earlier', He?d prefer to spend more time with his family. However, as his health and his vision 'which was blurry' starts to improve, his brother Tony tells him he thinks he can play again, what should he do? Never Give Up is an inspiring story that makes you want to keep reading until the end. For me it?s hard to get into a book, but for once in my life I actually was able to get into a book the second I turned the first page. Truly if your looking for a good memoir then you have to put Never Give Up on your list it will teach you about strokes, encourage you to try harder, and it will make you realize things could be a whole lot worse. Now that you know about Never Give Up I?d recommend that if anyone that needs a good read for school or book group or just anything, this book will really show you its not always fair out in this world. This book has a great voice, is moving, and the ending will definitely blow you away. I would, hands down, give this book five stars.
