    Synopsis

This unique book presents an authoritative guide to the medical and surgical management of complex neurosurgical problems encountered in the critical care setting. It provides straightforward summaries of each stage of patient care, guiding the reader through initial assessment, including ordering the appropriate lab work, triage procedures, such as how to manage patients with multi-system injuries, and sedation and pain management. The book also covers important nursing and medical-legal issues related to neurosurgical intensive care.

Reviewer:Celso Agner, MD, MSc (University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine)
Description:Neurological outcomes have significantly improved with the progression in neurocritical care. Modern therapies and diagnostic modalities introduced since the early 1990s helped support the development of the field, summarized in this book.
Purpose:The purpose is to address the neurocritical care management of patients with diverse neurosurgical conditions.
Audience:Neurosurgeons, neurologists, intensivists, and anesthesiologists are the targeted audience. The editor is a well known authority and most of the authors are members of the editor's service; over a fourth of the authors are residents in the editor's department.
Features:Unfortunately, there are many drawbacks to this book, including the lack of a specific chapter on management of cerebral vasospasm, hypothermia protocols for patients with strokes and ischemic episodes, correct management of sodium issues in neurological intensive care, and management of common neurosurgical conditions such as brain tumors, intracranial aneurysms, pituitary apoplexy, and postoperative care. There are more comprehensive books in the market that could easily replace this guide. Neurocritical care is a subspecialty of critical care and, as such, a book should be comprehensive enough to incorporate general medicine into management of neurosurgical patients. There are some important chapters in the book, including the initial chapters, essential in the understading of neurocritical care. Unfortunately, this book does not progress in the same pace to reflect evolution in the otherfields.
Assessment:This book does not compare to Wijdick's The Clinical Practice of Critical Care Neurology, 2nd edition (Oxford University Press, 2003) or Ropper et al.'s Neurological and Neurosurgical Intensive Care, 4th edition (Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, 2004) . It can be added to most academic libraries, but it is not comprehensive enough to serve as a guide to daily neurocritical care practice.
