Reviewer:Joseph I. Sirven, MD (Mayo Clinic Hospital)
Description:This is the fifth edition of this must-have, authoritative yet practical, multiauthored textbook covering essentially all areas of clinical neuroscience. This update of the 2004 edition includes a web site that allows readers to access updates to chapters as well as the ability to retrieve and download figures and supplementary videos. The authors are all authorities in their respective subspecialties.
Purpose:The purpose is to present an authoritative body of clinical neurology information that is practical for both those who are beginning their neuroscience training and those clinical neurologists caring for patients. The editors wish to present the "most comprehensive and most authoritative text of both the art and the science of neurology." The objectives are indeed worthy and, more importantly, they are met.
Audience:Intended for a broad audience of clinical neuroscience practitioners, the book features writing that is expert in tone but easily accessible to all neurology learners.
Features:No area of the clinical neurosciences is left uncovered. The editors have done an amazing job of presenting information in a number of ways. One can access content either by a symptom such as "falls" or by a grouping of disease problems such as "neurological disorders of skeletal muscle." The book has easy to read illustrations and terrific videos in the supplemental material which are highlighted in the book. The videos of EEG and seizures and of movement disorders are particularly helpful in demonstrating the 3-dimensional qualitiesof many neurological conditions. This has now become the book that all neurologists, hospitals, and academic libraries must possess and its absence would render a library incomplete.
Assessment:The fifth edition of this book continues to dazzle and improve upon previous editions. The web site with updates that accompanies the book and the rewritten material to reflect the rapid pace of discovery in neurogenetics and neurological therapeutics make purchase of this edition necessary even for owners of previous editions.
