      Synopsis

Introduced in 1977 and completely revised in 1994, these bestselling photographic field guides have become the birding bibles of more than four million enthusiasts. Virtually every bird found in North America is brought to life in a full-color photograph and with textual information on the bird's voice, nesting habits, habitat, range, and interesting behaviors. Accompanying range maps; overhead flight silhouettes; sections on bird-watching, accidental species, and endangered birds make these the most comprehensive field guides to birds available.

Note: the Western Edition covers the Rocky Mountain range and all the states to the west of it, while the Eastern Edition generally covers states east of the Rocky Mountains.

      Booknews

An exciting development for birders: the revised edition of this truly classic field guide (first, 1977) presents 544 Western species with 676 clear, high-quality photographs--which are much more accurate than those in the 1977 edition. Also different: the descriptive portion of the text is arranged by species rather than by habitat. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)

August 30, 2009: I live in the western US and really enjoy, camping, hiking, observation of wildlife, including birds. Binoculars are a great tool. "The Field Guide to Birds," by the National Audubon Society, answers my curiosity in helping to accurately identify the species I observe.

For the novice, it is difficult to distinguish subtle difference between species from a pair of photographs that may not even show an entire bird. The discriptions of the various species are helpful, adding additional insight. In the process of looking for an answer to a single question, the result is always the addition of greater learning and a wider range of information that I had originally sought.

The binding and cover makes the book much more durable for travel and outdoor use.
