Author/artist Masashi Kishimoto was born in 1974 in rural Okayama Prefecture, Japan. After spending time in art college, he won the Hop Step Award for new manga artists with his manga Karakuri ("Mechanism"). Kishimoto decided to base his next story on traditional Japanese culture. His first version of Naruto, drawn in 1997, was a one-shot story about fox spirits; his final version, which debuted in Weekly Shonen Jump in 1999, quickly became the most popular ninja manga in Japan.

April 16, 2009: I recently bought this book because I'd read the original one from Japan and liked it immediately. I was strangely dissapointed to find they managed to edit out much of what I loved with the original version. The cursing and much of the dialouge were changed or edited oddly. I still can't believe Hidan had all his swearing cut. It's a key part of his character, and I just couldn't find any enthusiasm for the writing. The pictures are amazing, if a little bloody at times. If you're buying this, get it for the artwork. It was beautifully done.
