Description:This is a comprehensive overview of emergency medicine in outline form. The previous edition was published in 1998.
Purpose:The stated purpose is to provide residents, medical students, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners with a basic introduction to the core content of emergency medicine. This is a worthy, although difficult, objective. The book meets the author's objectives, especially for people new to the specialty.
Audience:The audience includes students and practitioners in training. The book does not address, nor does it try to address, the needs of attending physicians or those who have been practicing for several years who need more in-depth information about specific topics.
Features:The book covers a majority of topics in emergency medicine in light to moderate detail. The best aspect of the book is that it satisfies its objective with the outline format, which makes it easy to read and quickly learn the material. The book also has questions at the end of each section and a reference to online questions for further study. A few tables highlight important points and pictures, diagrams, and outlines/algorithms enforce the main ideas.
Assessment:This is another high quality outline-type review of emergency medicine in the National Medical Series for Independent Study. The book satisfies its goals of being an introductory text for emergency medicine. The second edition is justified given the many changes and advances in emergency medicine since the first edition was published.
