This "Step into Reading, Ready for Chapters" level 5 book discusses NASCAR racing and drivers. Short biographical sketches of the drivers show just how dangerous the sport can be, and why it is so thrilling to the participants and spectators. The reading level is just right for students whose fluency is developing and who want nonfiction sports books to read; it is about a topic that will appeal to boys. The large type size and simple sentence construction make this book easy to read, but some vocabulary words will have to be explained. Students using the book as a resource for biographical reports will be able to pick out facts easily. The lack of a table of contents and an index make it harder to find out just which drivers are discussed, but that may show up in the cataloging record. Each entry about a driver is followed by a short timeline of the person's life. While Janet Guthrie is mentioned, more contemporary women drivers are not. The paperback edition won't have a long shelf life in a library so consider the hardbound edition. Useful in classroom libraries and leveled libraries where there is need for this kind of book.
