    Synopsis

Trixie’s on the trail of a century-old mystery! She’s headed to Williamsburg, Virginia, to find an old plantation house, Rosewood Hall, that was the home to the Sunderland family during the Civil War. Rumor has it that a cursed emerald necklace is buried in a secret passageway there. But after all that time, Rosewood Hall is just a ruin. Is it too late for Trixie to find the missing emeralds?

    Naomi Milliner - Children's Literature

Meet Trixie Belden, age indeterminate; place of residence, Sleepyside; best friend, Honey ("as sweet as she is pretty"); favorite expression, "Gleeps!"; happiest when solving mysteries. Luckily, while cleaning the attic, our intrepid heroine stumbles upon a 100-year-old letter describing an emerald necklace that is not only hidden, but cursed! Leave it to resourceful Trixie and her secret Bob-White club to find their way to Virginia in search of the missing gems. Along the way they meet Neil, a suspicious young cowboy; Jenkins, a bad-tempered man planning to convert the ruined estate into a horse farm; and Mr. Carver, a wheelchair-bound (but still handsome!) descendant of the jewels. When Trixie and buddy Jim find themselves in a crypt and discover a locket with the necklace's whereabouts, Neil shows up and tussles with Jim. Then the gang finds Mr. C. beaten and bloody, and the latest clue...GONE! In the end Trixie finds the jewels, catches the bad guy, and gives Mr. C. the chance for the costly surgery that will allow him to walk again. Gleeps! The 14th in a popular 1960s series, Trixie still holds her own, but could use a minor facelift (in fact, the 2006 cover by Michael Koelsch is much more appealing than the original). One nice feature is the sprinkling of information throughout (like the origin of "red tape"), but 10-cent words like "obstreperous" juxtaposed against "gleeps" and "spiffy" is hard to reconcile. All in all, Trixie is still a fun read...but she's no match for Sammy Keyes! 2006 (orig. 1965), Random House, Ages 10 to 13.

June 04, 2006: As a preteen, this was my favorite mystery in the Trixie Belden series. I have recently revisited this book 24 years later and still enjoyed it immensely. It has all the intrigue you expect from Trixie!
