    Synopsis

New York Times bestselling author Jodi Picoult is widely acclaimed for her keen insights into the hearts and minds of real people. Now she tells the emotionally riveting story of a family torn apart by conflicting needs and a passionate love that triumphs over human weakness.

Anna is not sick, but she might as well be. By age thirteen, she has undergone countless surgeries, transfusions, and shots so that her older sister, Kate, can somehow fight the leukemia that has plagued her since childhood. The product of preimplantation genetic diagnosis, Anna was conceived as a bone marrow match for Kate — a life and a role that she has never challenged...until now. Like most teenagers, Anna is beginning to question who she truly is. But unlike most teenagers, she has always been defined in terms of her sister — and so Anna makes a decision that for most would be unthinkable, a decision that will tear her family apart and have perhaps fatal consequences for the sister she loves.

My Sister's Keeper examines what it means to be a good parent, a good sister, a good person. Is it morally correct to do whatever it takes to save a child's life, even if that means infringing upon the rights of another? Is it worth trying to discover who you really are, if that quest makes you like yourself less? Should you follow your own heart, or let others lead you? Once again, in My Sister's Keeper, Jodi Picoult tackles a controversial real-life subject with grace, wisdom, and sensitivity.

    The Washington Post

Picoult is at her best, and most moving, when writing from the perspective of Anna's mother, Sara. Exhausted by Kate's recurrent illness, Sara is often on edge and overwhelmed. But she is also focused: Her tenacity, her vigilance and her support during Kate's aggressive cancer treatments all give Kate a reason to live. Mothering takes on new meaning, and the mundane becomes surreal: Kate's goldfish, according to the oceanologist Sara consults in a desperate effort to save the pet's life, requires bottled water, and the mere thought of buying Jesse a new pair of soccer cleats after Kate relapses seems "downright obscene." — Katherine Arie

November 23, 2009: My Sister's Keeper is a story about two very close sisters, Kate and Anna Fitzgerald. The older of the two, Kate, was diagnosed with leukemia when she was two years old. The doctor had also informed them that Kate needed to have a bone marrow transplant or she would die. Kate's parents, Sara and Brian, wanted to do everything in their power to save their daughter. In order for her to proceed with the bone marrow transplant, she must have a compatible donor. The Fitzgeralds did have another child, a boy named Jesse. However, Jesse's blood was not compatible to that of his sister's. As a result, Sara and Brian decided to 'engineer' another baby. This baby, Anna Fitzgerald, did save Kate. As the years progressed there were many occasions where Anna saved her sister.

Anna, now thirteen years old, was able to comprehend the situation that she was in. She realized that she would never be able to do anything for herself because Kate always needed her. When Kate was hospitalized, so was Anna. Kate now needed one of Anna's kidneys. Sara, who was used to having Anna give everything to Kate didn't think much of this. However,it mattered a lot to Anna and led her to making a surprising decision. She had decided to sue her parents for the rights to her own body. There are two sides that one can choose when addressing Anna's decision. One of them is that Anna should not have to be forced to carry on with these operations. Her body is hers and hers only. However, the other perspective is that if Anna didn't do this for Kate, she would look like a selfish monster who didn't care about her sister. Nonetheless, Anna carried on with the lawsuit. This decision sparked different themes within the book. One of which is relationships. Relationships between siblings and parents. Kate obviously knows that Anna wants to proceed with the lawsuit, however she remains calm throughout the entire ordeal for reasons which will be revealed to the reader at the end of the novel. Sara and Brian are enraged but at the same time, confused about their daughter's decision. They want the best for all of their children, but to Anna and Jesse it could sometimes seem as though they are not as valuable to their parents as Kate is.

Overall this book was an amazing read. Although the story started out somewhat mundane, it quickly became tremendously captivating. One seriously cannot put down this book after reading the first chapter. Jodi Picoult has done an incredible job creating an original and touching plot that was supported by interesting and complex characters. Every emotion can be felt through the pages. There are parts within this book where the reader can end up crying and others when the reader can't help but to smile. It is filled with so much character. Overall, buyers will simply enjoy reading this novel.
