Synopsis

It seems Ken can't do anything right. He loses saddle blankets and breaks reins䳨en comes the worst news yet: a report card so bad that he has to repeat a grade. How can you tame the dreamy mind of a boy who stares out of the window instead of taking an exam? Enter Flicka, the chestnut filly with a wild spirit. Over the course of one magical summer, both will learn the meaning of responsibility, courage, and, ultimately, friendship.

Annotation

Through his intense devotion to the colt Flicka, a young boy, living on a Wyoming ranch, begins to learn about responsibility and gain a better understanding of his brusque father.

Children's Literature

When a story endures and remains in print for more than sixty years, it has to be exceptional. Such is the case with this book about the McLaughan family. Rob and his wife, Nell, have two sons, Howard and ten-year-old Ken, who is the main focus of the novel. Ken is the "problem child" who always seems to be in some sort of predicament. A very bad report card that means repeating a grade next fall is the worst trouble of all. Nell persuades her husband that giving Ken the total care of a horse will teach him responsibility and help him mature. When Ken chooses the high-spirited filly, Flicka, everyone is sure this will lead to more difficulties or even disaster. But as the summer progresses, Ken and his dad learn more about life and each other. This is that rare book that can be enjoyed on more than one level, as it is not just about horses or coming of age but a marvelous love story as well. A whole new group of youngsters and adults will now be able to savor this beautifully written tale.

May 28, 2006: My Friend Flicka is a wonderful book about the triumphs and tribulations of taming a difficult horse. Ken learns many lessons from taming Flicka, and Flicka learns to trust people, something her mother never learned.

May 18, 2006: I recommend the book because it's not very hard to understand. Students who are ages 8 to 12 years can enjoy this book, but if you are older, you should still read it because it is a beautiful story about a boy's friendship with a horse. One day the horse gets hurt and it's up to the boy to take care of Flicka so she can get better. This book is recommended for people who are in love with horses.
