Description:The second edition of this popular book among radiology residents has been thoroughly revised and expanded since the first publication in 1996. It provides detailed descriptions and high quality images of common musculoskeletal disease processes.
Purpose:The book addresses common musculoskeletal disorders and illustrates the typical/classic radiographic appearance of these disorders. Magnetic resonance and computed tomographic and sonographic images are included where appropriate. The book serves as an excellent introduction to musculoskeletal disorders for beginning radiology residents and medical students.
Audience:According to the authors, the book is designed to serve as a reference for general radiologists and diagnostic radiology residents and fellows as well as other physicians interested in musculoskeletal imaging, such as orthopedic surgeons, rheumatologists, and rehabilitative medicine practitioners. The three contributing authors are recognized authorities in musculoskeletal radiology.
Features:The book is divided into six chapters that review common musculoskeletal disease processes. The first three chapters address tumors, arthritis, and trauma and provide clear, relatively in-depth discussions of the topics. The last three chapters (metabolic bone diseases, congenital and developmental skeletal conditions, and miscellaneous, including hematogeneous disorder and infection) , provide an overview of the more commonly encountered disorders related to the chapter topics. The final section of the book consistsof three appendixes. The first two describe arthrographic and infant hip sonographic techniques in clear, concise terms, and are accompanied by relevant illustrations. Practical procedural tips are particularly beneficial for the novice. The third appendix is a list of alphabetized common "named fractures." The book is easy to read. The "key concept" boxes and tables highlight common disorders and differential diagnoses as well as serve as concise references, particularly for radiology residents preparing for the specialty boards.
Assessment:This is an excellent, readable introductory book for medical students, radiology residents and nonradiology clinicians interested in musculoskeletal disorders. The three contributing authors have completely revised and markedly expanded the second edition. This 554-page book is lightweight and easily transported. The size enables students and residents to read the book from cover to cover. The book is not designed to provide the detail and complexity offered in the fourth edition of the encyclopedic 6-volume reference, Diagnosis of Bone and Joint Disorders, edited by Resnick.
