In 1957, Harper published its first I Can Read title, Little Bear, written by Else Holmelund Minarik and illustrated by Maurice Sendak. Large type, simple vocabulary, chapter-like divisions, and decorative pictures made Little Bear perfect for emerging readers-they could read the story comfortably and not feel overwhelmed by the text. Following suit came such classics as Peggy Parish's Amelia Bedelia series, Lillian Hoban's books about Arthur the monkey, and Syd Hoff's popular Danny and the Dinosaur. Many books in this series are special in the depth of emotion evoked - Little Bear, the Frog and Toad books by Arnold Lobel, and Daniel's Duck by Clyde Bulla, to name a few - and all are enjoyed by children of all ages. Grade 1 - Grade 3.
Arnold Lobel (1933-1987) was the award-winning author and illustrator of many beloved children's books, including the classic I Can Read books about Frog and Toad, and the Caldecott Medal winning Fables.

October 26, 2009: Just like each and every one of the Frog & Toad stories, Mouse Tales is sure to delight any child. My son absolutely loves this collection of short stories. As a reader it effectively challenges him in parts, yet provides sufficient repetition to keep him on track. The stories are a lot of fun, and the pictures effectively add to the overall enjoyment.
I Also Recommend: Days with Frog and Toad.

October 04, 2009: This book is a perfect early reader. My daughter is almost five and can read most of the words. The reader is a level at which my daughter can feel confident about her reading skills while including a couple of challenges to build those skills. I also like the length of the stories. They are interesting, different and short enough to maintain her attention. This is a great gift for the early reader.
