    Synopsis

An acclaimed expert in Christian mysticism travels to a monastery high in the Trodos Mountains of Cyprus and offers a fascinating look at the Greek Orthodox approach to spirituality that will appeal to readers of Carlos Castaneda.

    Publishers Weekly

Markides, a Maine sociologist who was raised in the Greek Orthodox faith and later drifted into agnosticism, continues his spiritual journey homeward in this collection of captivating conversations with the monk Father Maximos. The book is set on the island of Cyprus, where the author and his monastic mentor spent extended periods of time together due to unexpected circumstances that moved Father Maximos from the "Holy Mountain" of Mount Athos. Markides (Riding with the Lion), his interest piqued by an earlier pilgrimage to Mount Athos, used a sabbatical from the University of Maine to further explore the body of Christian mysticism that Mount Athos's monks have preserved since the ninth century. Here, Markides and others pepper the charismatic Maximos with questions on a wide range of topics from angels, saints and demons to the role of icons in worship and the place of hell in Christian belief. Markides is a skillful and skeptical inquisitor whose queries surely must have tried the patience of his mentor. But Maximos rises to the occasion, providing gentle, thoughtful answers that by necessity often transcend the Western mind's reliance on logic in spiritual matters. Markides's work is an excellent resource for spiritual seekers of all levels, answering questions about Christianity in general and Eastern monasticism in particular. It will be of special interest to those who may be unaware of Christianity's deep roots in mysticism. (Sept.) Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information.

September 08, 2006: This is one of the best introductions into Orthodox spiritualty (in particular the spirituality of the monks of Mt. Athos)that I have ever had the pleasure of reading. It is a travel-log of Professor Markides (sociologist of the U. of Maine)time spent in Cyprus, from the late nineties up to the dawn of the new millenium. While at a sabbatical retreat in a Cypriot monastery, he talks about different spiritual topics with the monastery's abbot, Father Maximos. Based on their conversations, the reader gets a panoramic view of the Athonite tradition. The most important endevour of any person is to reach union with God by 'theosis'. This is done through prayer, study of scripture and the writings of the Holy Fathers, fasting and good works while partaking of the Eucharist and confessing one's sins. Father Maximos goes into detail about how to go into these things and some things to be avoided like the plague (Fr. Maximos speaks of demonic possesion due to people joining Satanic cults or using occult rituals). Also the chapter entilted 'Escape from Hell' is a refreshing anecdote to the fire & brimstone theology of Western Christianity. Its speaks of Greek elders praying for souls in hell and how those souls eventually reach Heaven through God's mercy and their prayers. So if you have at least one iota of interest in Eastern Orthodoxy (or are only familiar with Protestantism or Catholicism)please do your self a favor and buy or rent this book. You will be sure to see the spiritual life through new lenses.
