Synopsis

Encouraging, user-friendly, and altogether unique, Mosby's Tour Guide to Nursing School encourages you to not only survive nursing school, but excel in whichever program you select. Throughout the book, Dr. Chenevert compares your journey through nursing school to a road trip, and she offers advice to increase your understanding, help you successfully navigate obstacles, and make your journey more enjoyable. You'll learn how to prepare for the NCLEX™ and your nursing career, how to get good grades, how to deal with failure, how to improve oral and written reports, and much more. A must-have for every nursing student!

  • Endorsed by the National Student Nurses Association (NSNA).

  • Written by a nationally known motivational speaker and nurse, the book's down-to-earth approach uses humor and clever analogies to clearly teach the information you need to know.

  • Uses the analogy of a cross-country road trip to help you see the relationships between different aspects of nursing school, as well as give you a finite view of its duration and end result.

  • Inspirational quotes throughout offer wisdom and encouragement from fellow nursing students and graduates.

  • The appendix lists numerous diverse resources you'll find useful before, during, and after nursing school.

  • Electronic Age Information covers distance learning, online courses, and podcasts, facilitating your success both in today's electronic classroom and with the advancing technology in nursing.

  • A special NCLEX™ chapter (Chapter 29: Are We There Yet? Almost.) providesyou with the tools you need to prepare for and pass the NCLEX™.

  • Updated statistics and information on the emerging trends of the workforce keep you current with what's happening in the world outside nursing and help you make educated choices during nursing school.

  • Three chapters are devoted to diversity in today's workforce and the non-traditional student.

  • Thorough coverage of ADN, BSN, and RN-BSN programs (program prerequisites, differences, and more) helps you make informed decisions about your choice of nursing programs.

  • An appendix of Online Resources provides quick and easy access to web sites that will assist both students and graduates with continued study and real-world advice.

Reviewer:Bonnie L. Saucier, PhD, RN (Indiana State University)
Description:This is the fourth edition of a classic book describing typical student nursing experiences in a candid, humorous way. This is a unique method for discussing a tough trip with navigational points along the way. The last edition was published in 1995.
Purpose:The purpose is to provide a good road map through the journey of nursing. This unique tour guide gives the reader tips before starting the journey, plots the course, and prepares the traveler for the trip itself. It helps to keep the goal of nursing in sight at all times. This book is a much needed reference for the beginning nursing student. The positive, upbeat approach allows the reader to accomplish the author's objectives in a light-hearted and comical way.
Audience:This book is written for the incoming nursing student, particularlly for the "mature" student who is over 20 years of age. It is also a wonderful guide for nurses returning for advanced degrees and experienced students from other fields making a career switch into nursing. The author has the extensive background and experience needed to make this a truly classic tour guide to nursing school
Features:This edition is an all new update with two new chapters. Chapter 1, "Ticket to Ride" provides the student with a unique sales pitch for the nursing profession. Chapter 22, "Hot Wired" teaches the student how to learn to use the Internet and to find the best Web sites. Information is provided for everything from boosting test scores to conducting study groups, overcoming procrastination and avoidingcollisions in personal and professional lifes. Examples and ideas are given from other nursing students. This a collaborative effort with Mosby, National Student Nurses Association (NSNA) and the author. Input comes from nursing students and nurses from all over the United States and Canada. Appendixes cover a wide variety of much needed information and an inclusive index is provided. Cartoons are dispersed throughout, adding to the humorous intent.
Assessment:This book exemplifies a unique approach and offers the reader a light and uplifting version of a tour through nursing. It has a refreshing perspective, gives valuable information, and keeps the student alert and alive until the end.

May 05, 2004: I loved this book. I read it before every new semster just to let me know I am not the only one who feels and thinks the way I do about school. I recommend it to families of nursing students too. It helps them to understand how hard school is all the time and detication needed.
