Reviewer: Steven K. Hamick, BIS, RCP, RRT, AE-C(William Beaumont Hospitals)
Description: This is the original pocket dictionary of terminology in medical, nursing, and other health professions. The sixth edition includes over 5,000 new entries and over 25,000 definitions. The previous edition was published in 2006.
Purpose: It is intended as an affordable, compact, and thorough quick reference to the language of health sciences. The pocket dictionary is condensed from the hardcover version (Mosby's Dictionary of Medicine, Nursing and Health Professions, 8th edition, (Elsevier, 2009)).
Audience: Although written primarily for healthcare students and practitioners, it also would be a terrific resource for laypersons.
Features: The dictionary's most distinctive feature is its size — it does fit in a lab coat pocket, although it is rather thick. A guide to using the dictionary is followed by over 1,400 pages of terms, most of which have an accompanying pronunciation guide. Two appendixes provide an English-Spanish translation guide and an American Sign Language and Manual Communication guide. Both front and back inside covers feature commonly used abbreviations. Also included are selected British spellings to assist readers in recognizing alternate spellings.
Assessment: This is a well done pocket dictionary. It is precise, easy to use, and now contains over 25,000 terms. As terms are added, one of the biggest challenges will be to keep the dictionary slim enough to fit in a lab coat pocket.
