Reviewer:Carole A. Kenner, RNC, DNS, FAAN (University of Oklahoma College of Nursing)
Description:This is a quick reference to nursing diagnoses and care plan guides. The first edition was published in 2006.
Purpose:It is intended as a portable resource for nursing diagnoses and planning care.
Audience:This guide is perfect for practicing nurses and students. The authors are credible authorities in planning care.
Features:The book starts with a comprehensive list of nursing diagnoses and then moves into a guide for planning care. It uses color-coded, alphabetized, right handed indexes, making the sections easy to locate. The second section follows the format of the nursing diagnosis, definition, defining characteristics, related factors, client outcomes, nursing interventions, special considerations for pediatric or geriatric clients, then implications for home care, and finally client/family teaching. Two symbols are used to indicate whether the intervention is independent or collaborative, helping guide nurses with care planning.
Assessment:There are many nursing diagnosis books on the market. For example, Carpenito-Moyet's Nursing Diagnosis: Application to Clinical Practice, 12th edition (Lippincott, Williams, & Wilkins, 2008) , focuses on application to clinical practice and is comprehensive, but too big to easily carry to clinical. This guide is a companion to the authors' larger Nursing Diagnosis Handbook: An Evidence-Based Guide to Planning Care, 8th edition (Elsevier, 2008) . This second edition presents the most current NANDA approved diagnoses. The book ishigh quality and very user-friendly.
