    Library Journal

The Montessori method of education has expanded over the past decades, moving beyond its early focus on preschool education to the elementary and secondary levels. But how would Maria Montessori have advised the parents of children through age three? The authors, cofounders of a Montessori school in Lake Bluff, IL, here present practical information based on workshops they have created for such parents. Following an overview of Montessori's life and work that includes insights into the pedagogical foundations of her methods, they detail the preparation of a home environment that will facilitate a child's developmental growth. Parents who embrace Montessori's approach will find this a marvelous guide to child rearing, and prospective teachers wishing to gain insights into the Montessori method will value it as a clear and concise introduction. Highly recommended for public libraries with parenting collections and for academic libraries supporting child development or teacher education programs.-Jean Caspers, Linfield Coll. Lib., McMinnville, OR Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.

February 15, 2006: This book really helped me work many Montessorian principles into our daily life. Lots of ideas of how to set up your home and activities that are great for parent and child. The only reason I can't give it 5 stars is that, at times, I felt a little left out. My dd didn't walk at 12 months (more like 15 months) and in some ways the book made me feel that was my fault somehow (that I did too much for her or didn't challenge her enough). Maybe I'm over-sensitive. Toward the end of the book the author's say that not all of the ideas will work for everyone and basically sometimes you have to pick and choose so that made me feel less 'left out'. She's been walking a long time now and I'm going to reread it for her new stages of development as we approach 2. So, in a nutshell, the book was useful and I will refer to it as my child goes through various stages of development.
