    Synopsis

PORTABLE PROFESSORTM is a series of exciting and informative lectures recorded by some of today's most renowned university and college professors. Each course introduces listeners to fascinating, and sometimes startling, insights into the intellectual forces that shape our understanding of the world. Each package includes 14 riveting lectures presented by notable professors as well as a book-length course guide.

The epic is one of the foundations of Western literature. These sweeping tales of bitter trial and fantastic adventure have given the world its most celebrated heroes and most reviled villains, and the great epic themes—love, death, and the interplay between the human and the divine—are universal. In this lively and engrossing course, Professor Timothy B. Shutt takes us on a tour of some of the greatest examples of the form, illustrating why they remain as compelling today as in centuries past.

March 11, 2008: Professor Shutt makes all the epics of Western literature genuinely interesting and appealing. Even if you are not familiar with the literature, you get a good overview of its content and importance. Prior to listening to this course, I had only read two of the epics mentioned. Now, I plan to read all of them.

January 09, 2006: Professor Timothy Shutt does a terrific job generating interest for a topic that, for whatever reason, may not find as large of an audience as it once did. After listening to each of the units, I was so excited about the work discussed (the Illiad, The Odyssey, Beowulf, etc.) that I wanted to read the work in question right then. I was torn, though, as Professor Shutt's lectures were so entertaining, I had to keep listening! This lecture series serves as a great introduction to many classic works of literature. I am commuting in my car for 2 hours a day, and my plan now is to get each of the works discussed in order in audio format and listen again to the corresponding lectures as I am sure I will get even more out of them on a second listen.
