    Synopsis

Even if we can't say it in copy, this is a book that turns Tolkien, and all the fantasy derived from his masterpiece, on its head, by asking the questions, "What if Frodo had failed?" In this first volume of the Mistborn trilogy, Sanderson gives us a worl

    Publishers Weekly

Sanderson's eerie second fantasy (after 2005's Elantris), set in a mist-haunted, ash-ridden world, pits Kelsier, "the Survivor of Hathsin," against the immortal Lord Ruler's 1,000-year domination of both the Great Houses and their serflike "skaa." Through Allomancy acquired in the Ruler's most hellish prison, Kelsier can "burn" 10 metals internally, fueling superhuman powers he uses to assemble rebels in a loose plan to destroy the nobility, the empire and the Lord Ruler himself. Kelsier uses Vin, a street urchin with the same Mistborn powers Kelsier possesses, to infiltrate the Great Houses' society, where she falls in love with philosopher prince Elend Venture. This mystico-metallurgical fantasy combines Vin's coming-of-age-in-magic and its well-worn theme of revolt against oppression with copious mutilations, a large-scale cast of thieves, cutthroats, conniving nobles and exotic mutants. The fast-paced action scenes temper Vin's interminable ballroom intrigues, while the characters, though not profoundly drawn, have a raw stereotypic appeal. November 11, 2009: I just finished this book and I can't wait to go and buy the next two! Brandon Sanderson's writnig style is one thaat is able to grab readers from the first sentence and keep them enthralled far after they finish the boo. The character progression is quite interesting. To watch Vin, the main character, grow from a street urchin thief into a spy and allomancer of incredible power gives one a feeling that is incredibly hard to explain. I recommend this book with a huge amount of respect and awe for Mr. Sanderson.

An excellent epic fantasy story which actually finishes after 3 books? Surely not.by HiltonLange

November 10, 2009: The epic fantasy genre is plagued by writers who lose control of their stories, spinning endless threads and introducing new tangential plots. After his excellent standalone novel Elantris, Brandon Sanderson has once again proved that you don't need an entire shelf to tell a sweeping and epic fantasy story. It is so refreshing to read a gripping story and know that the beginning, middle and end were all paced, planned and executed as the author intended.

The world he has crafted is very original - much has been made of Sanderson's systems of magic, and the Allomancy in Mistborn is the series' major hook. The lead characters are deep and interesting, some of the peripheral characters are a little shallow, but nothing excessively.

Most of all, Sanderson writes an intelligent plot. He keeps readers guessing without being vague. I spent much time while reading all 3 books trying to figure out what twists and turns were coming, and all of them were suitably foreshadowed and set up to give them credibility. Again, this is the advantage of plotting your entire series at the beginning, rather than simply telling a story and letting it take its own direction, as so many fantasy writers seem to do.

Most exciting is the fact that Sanderson is a young writer, this is only his second published book. One can only hope that he can continue to produce work of a similarly high caliber.

I Also Recommend: The Name of the Wind, Elantris.
