When Eddie Ball finds out about the Finkles contest-a chance to win a million dollars just by sinking a foul shot at the NBA finals-he realizes it could be the end of his family's troubles but someone is trying to sabotage his million dollar shot.
Eleven-year-old Eddie gets a chance to win a million dollars by sinking a foul shot at the National Basketball Association finals.
Eddie Ball loves basketball. He hungers to enter a contest sponsored by his mother's employer(sink a free throw and win a million dollars. Eddie's dreams are dashed when he discovers that the contest is closed to employees and their families. However, he receives a bittersweet opportunity when his mother is laid off. Eddie is then picked for the contest after his poem, written by his friend Annie, is selected as the winning entry. Eddie's relationship with Annie, an African-American girl who lives in the same trailer park with her father as the Balls do, is one of the more interesting aspects of this book. Annie and her father, a former college basketball player, help Eddie train for the big day. Eddie's interactions with Annie also bring their single parents together in perhaps a rather fanciful relationship. The book bogs down in the middle as Eddie seems to spend an inordinate amount of time practicing. The event itself is somewhat unrealistic since Eddie's million dollar shot comes from the free throw line, a relatively easy shot to make. This book is a good read even if some aspects are overly wistful. Undoubtedly, basketball playing children will be able to relate to Eddie's situation.

October 29, 2008: I love The Million Dollar Shot because the more you read, the longer it will take for you to put the book down. The story begins in gym class with his whole class. Eddie had the ball with only two minutes left of the game. He went for the shot. ?Air ball? shouted the enemy team. The game was over. After the game everybody stared to call air balls, Eddie balls. Then at the end of the school year Eddie meets Annie Strokly. She is good at basketball and her dad, Mr. Strokely works with Eddie?s mom. Then one normal after noon when Annie and Eddie were playing basketball Eddies mom came running with the news paper and told us to read the article that sys The Million Dollar Shot in big bold letters at the top. It said that George Finkle is willing to give away a million dollars to one lucky contestant if they can sink a foul shot at half tine. The lucky contestant will be chosen by a poem contest. Annie and Eddie were excided but Eddie?s mom was mad because the roomer at the factory was that people would get fired so George Finkle can pull this off. Most roomers are myths but the next day when Eddie and Annie were in the bus going back home they met up with Eddie?s mom and Mr.Strokly and Eddie?s mom was right. George Finkle fired Mr.Strokly and Eddie?s mom. A week later Eddie sends his poem which said, `?How could the Pilgrims e?er be contented, / when savory Finkles had not been invented?? Then a few months later, in the news, it said that Eddie Ball is the winner! I would like to tell you the rest of the story, but you have to read the book to find out. I liked this book because it was really exciting. I would recommend this book to people under the age of fifteen because it?s mostly a children?s book. It had great description and hilarious humor. This remembers me at the time that my brother?s team was tied and there was only thirty seconds left in the game. So the game ended as a tie.
