Dr. Mackenzie Connor races against time to help the Interspecies Union devise a plan to prevent an interstellar enemy from conquering world after world.
After encountering the alien Dhyrn on earth and later nearly dying on the Dhyrn home world in Czerneda's Survival (2004), biologist Mackenzie "Mac" Connor returns to her job at Norcoast Salmon Research Facility in the Pacific Northwest in this action-filled sequel, which likewise explores the complexities of interspecies culture and understanding with humor and dash. When the Interspecies Union discovers that the formerly peaceful Dhryn have abandoned their world and set off across space, destroying every life form in their path, Mac leads the effort to find a way to stop them. Her Dhryn experience and knowledge of biological drives and animal instinct may provide the key-but her expertise also makes her a target for a hidden enemy, who may have already infiltrated the Interspecies Union. Czerneda's characterizations, both human and alien, are as intricate and entertaining as the twisty plot. Fans of SF adventure and intrigue-and of C.J. Cherryh's masterfully drawn alien cultures, in particular-are in for a treat. (May 3) Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.

August 06, 2009: When you combine a great plot, exceptional characters, and a brilliant writer, you end up with a Julie Czerneda sci-fi novel! Every last one of her books has me completely entertained, and I think she has out-done herself in this series. These are events and characters that I will always remember, and I can't wait to devour the final novel! If you have never read a science fiction book, this is the perfect place to start :)

Brymn, a seven foot seven blue alien Dhryn, informs the government and Norcoast Salmon Research Facility?s Dr. Mac Connor that a hostile race the Ro is coming to destroy Earthlings; nobody will be aware of it because of a unique stealth technology they use. Trusting Brymn, Mac travels to the Dhryn home world where he and species transform into feeders, devouring every planet that is in their path.--- Back on Earth, Mac wants to forget the horror she witnessed first hand. Unfortunately she is the only one who can read and speak Dhyrn and is needed at a top secret conference of the Interspecies Union. The leaders of the Union want Mac to figure out why the Dhyrn turned from allies to carnivorous predators. Mac who specializes in the migrations of salmons thinks that the Dhryn are acting on a similar biological impulse. She finds evidence that though the Ro can deal with the Dhryn, they are not the saviors of the IC or earth but their enemy. Mac must convince the powers that be who is the foe and who is the ally.--- Book two of the Species Imperative saga is a fascinating, action packed work that brings together believable sentient beings working together for a common cause. Mac is a terrific heroine who though she fears the Dhryn is willing to work with a captured one in order to figure out why they changed and devoured three planets, leaving them barren of all life. She is the heroic thread that brings a fabulous science fiction thriller together.--- Harriet Klausner
