    Synopsis

An epic on an intimate scale, Memoirs of a Geisha takes the reader behind the rice-paper screens of the geisha house to a vanished floating world of beauty and cruelty, from a poor fishing village in 1929 to the decadence of 1940s Kyoto, through the chaos of World War II to the towers of the Waldorf Astoria Hotel, where the gray-eyed geisha Sayuri unfolds the remarkable story of her life.

    Newsday

As close to un-put-downable as any novel in years, yet bristling with intelligence and grace. Wow!

November 15, 2009: I truly lived the vivid reality of the Memoirs of a Geisha. The journey of reading this wonderful work took me from tears to chills. A roller coaster of emotion. Lot's imagery was used in this work and it's methaphorical expressions make the story come to life.

November 06, 2009: I loved reading this book. It had a wonderful story line that held me captive for a week. The story is about how a small girl from a fishing village becomes one of the greatest Geisha to live in pre-WWII Japan, her life during the war and her return to fame post-WWII. The story gave the history of how many Geisha came to be, the selling of children in Japan, and the life that you could expect if you were one of these children.

I loved the main character; she had a very determined personality. Once she decided something she stayed with that decision until she failed or succeeded. She is very inspiring in many ways. She uses all the resources around her to better herself and her life. This is something everyone should take advantage of.

The mood of the book follows the characters perfectly. It feels like you are there with them instead of reading about them. You could feel their happiness and pain, shame and pride. You can picture yourself walking the streets and viewing the cherry blossoms, sitting down to the tea ceremony with them serving you.

I feel there are many messages in this story but my favorite is that love does conquer all. Even in a world where love is forbidden for a Geisha. She broke my heart when she made her final decision on who to love. I was hoping she would choose the other.

All and all, it is a wonderfully written story and I would recommend it to any one that enjoys learning about different cultures and personal struggles.

I Also Recommend: The Lovely Bones, Angel-Seeker (Samaria Series #5), Kite Runner.
