      Synopsis

The world of Cars just got even bigger.

This book introduces 200 minor characters and "extras" featured in the movie and spotlighted in the Blu-Ray edition. From RVs and security SUVs to racecars and helicopters, kids will love meeting all of the new vehicles and reading the humorous descriptions about them. Plus, the jacket will be printed on the reverse so it can be used as a poster!

February 17, 2009: I bought this book because my 2.5-year-old toddler boy wanted it, which is not surprising since he is fanatical about the 2006 film Disney's Cars. The book's illustrations are good, but the format is weird. It's almost like a high school yearbook, maybe? Rather than being a story or linear in any sense, this book is a collection of vignettes about the various cars who populate the Radiator Springs and Piston Cup worlds. This collection in a sense would be fine except that so many of the cars are total unknowns if your only knowledge of those worlds comes from the film. We didn't recognize a good few of the cars in the book--maybe even half of them--and that seemed to confuse my son (as well as exhaust me since I found myself making things up to fill in the gaps!). I found myself suspicious that the big guys were just creating more characters so that there were more things to market.

So, overall, a bit tedious and disappointing for me, but my son likes it OK. I rated the book 3 stars for "just for fun"--because it is exactly that--and 1 star for "rereading" because, as I wrote earlier, it gets a bit tedious.
