When scientists began to make the connection between diet and disease, there was one region that stood out as a stronghold of healthful eating: the Mediterranean. After years of research, an international conference backed the Mediterranean diet as the best one for overall good health -- and the exciting news was that it tasted great, too.
Now you can take the tour yourself, with this unique Mediterranean vegan cookbook -- also ideal for vegetarians, those with a lactose intolerance, and anyone who wants to make gloriously delicious dishes without meat, eggs, or dairy.
Food writer Klein's goal was to include only vegan recipes "that really exist in Mediterranean cuisine," and because much of Mediterranean cooking is vegan by nature olive oil is used in many cuisines rather than butter, and meat has never been the centerpiece of the meal, for example she was successful. Rather than experimenting with replacements for anchovies and the like, she chose recipes that already met the requirements of a vegan diet, from a Moroccan Couscous with Seven-Vegetable Tagine to Proven al Tomatoes Stuffed with Herbed Rice. The one ingredient that is conspicuously absent, which Klein acknowledges, is cheese, as it's difficult to think of pesto and many pasta dishes without it; she leaves the option of using cheese substitutes to her readers. August 15, 2009: I love this book! I am not a strict vegan, but do like to keep the majority of my diet vegan for health reasons. I long ago, after wasting too much money on vegetarian cookbooks, decided I would never buy a vegetarian cookbook from a vegetarian. If the only way to make a dish palatable is to add sausage, I'll add sausage, not spicy tofu crumbles. This book is different! It has no tofu, no soy cheese, no texturized vegetable protein, and no new-age processed crap that vaguely resembles, but doesn't contain, a meat or dairy product. It's just really good recipes, true to the region, that vegans, vegetarians and omnivores can all enjoy. My meat-and-potato husband enjoys these recipes just as much as I do. I highly recommend this book!

February 23, 2009: I bought great Vegan cookbooks for my grand-daughter and the young man she will probably marry. He is a Vegan, she is not. I bought this for myself, as I want to cook something tasty and something anyone can enjoy when I have them over for a meal.
Another one which I purchased at the same time, by the same author, is Vegan Italiano, by Donna Klein.I am Italian, so I will enjoy cooking the dishes I found in these books.
