This textbook, which comes with two audiotapes, is a self-instructional book designed to provide the reader with skills to learn medical terminology in a programmed learning approach. The book is both a textbook and a workbook. The purpose is to help the reader learn medical terminology is an effective manner. The principal technique used throughout the book is called programmed learning, which consists of a series of teaching units called frames. The primary audience is health care students. The programmed learning approach presents a word-building method for developing a medical vocabulary. The book can be used with an instructor in a classroom setting or can be used by the reader as an independent study. The book contains 10 chapters, beginning with an introduction to programmed terminology and medical word building and continuing through all the body systems. Active participation is required of the reader. The reader writes answers in response to blocks of information, labels and colors anatomy and physiology diagrams, and completes review and case study exercises. The audiocassette tapes provide reinforcement of pronunciation, definitions of medical words, and spelling practice. A 24-page atlas of full-color plates displays anatomical structures referred to in the text. Eight appendixes are included, containing an index of medical word elements, an answer key, diagnostic lab and radiographic procedures, medications, abbreviations, medical specialties, and guidelines to indicate adjective, noun, and plural endings. Flash cards can be removed from the back of the book for review and practice. The book is a very comprehensive textbook designed to teach medical terminology. It includesmany exercises to encourage learning with an active approach. The black-and-white and color figures are used effectively to encourage understanding of the medical terminology and related anatomy.
