This is the fourth edition of a comprehensive adult medical-surgical textbook. Previous editions appeared in 1983, 1987, and 1992. The 2,043-page book includes the most current information about adult nursing care. Clinical practice and healthcare has changed rapidly. This book is designed to reflect these changes and has done so very well. Nursing students and their faculty will benefit most directly from this new textbook. Libraries that serve the learning needs of nurses will find this book a valuable holding. Healthcare facilities will find this a complete reference text. The authors are experienced experts in their field. The contributors and reviewers are nursing educators and clinical nursing specialists in cardiology, acute care, diabetes, oncology, urology, laboratory sciences, and case management. This is a hardbound book with beautiful four-color illustrations that add interest and educational value. Each of the 62 chapters is well referenced with current works by experts in the field. The table of contents is offered in three formats (1) by topic, (2) section, and (3) a more detailed content outline. Other special features include care plans, clinical pathways, critical thinking exercises, practice questions, culture, ethics, research, and aging issues. This is a comprehensive adult medical-surgical textbook that is packed full of current information. The colorful illustrations and locating symbols make this book very user friendly. Students and faculty will find this to be an excellent textbook choice.

This medical/surgical nursing textbook, with full color illustrations, is divided into two sections. In one, the discussion is a focus on general adult nursing concepts. In the other each body system is discussed thoroughly and accurately, starting with assessment and concluding with nursing management, including information about a variety of client settings. The purpose is to provide a comprehensive resource containing essential information that students need to prepare for lectures, classroom activities, examinations, clinical assignments, and in overall care of patients. The authors are targeting this book to nursing students at all levels. It is an excellent guide to use in the classroom and the clinical area. The book is divided into two major parts. In the first ten chapters the authors deal with general concepts of adult medical surgical nursing. They have divided the second into sections of physiological function (for example, "The Surgical Experience" and "Problems of Oxygenation: Ventilation"). Each section includes brief reviews of anatomy and physiology followed by discussion of assessment, diagnostic studies, and how these are managed by nurses. There is also thorough discussion of nursing management. Nursing care is discussed in ambulatory and home care settings, and health promotion information and acute care management issues are reviewed. This is a good quality book. I prefer it to other texts because of the way the physiological systems are divided. This book is easy to read and understand with excellent color illustrations, and easy to read tables. It can be used by the beginning nursing student and also by the advanced nursing student in medical-surgicalnursing studies. This is the fifth edition and the book has been updated with new vocabulary and current trends.

Description:This edition of a medical-surgical nursing book that the authors describe as "more than a textbook" has been revised to include current, updated nursing information.
Purpose:The purpose is to help "students learn medical-surgical content" which includes a focus on teaching, the elderly client, cultural and ethical considerations, home care, and evidence-based practice.
Audience:The book is written for nurse faculty, student nurses, and practicing nurses. It is often used in schools of nursing as a primary or secondary source of material for lecture. Nursing students use it to find out about their patients and to develop a plan of care. The authors are experts in this area and have prepared seven editions of the book.
Features:The 12 chapters in the first of the book's two sections focus on core concepts related to adults. The second section, chapters 13 through 69, covers nursing assessment and management. The chapters cover specific disease processes that are organized into subsections covering anatomy and physiology, health history and assessment, and diagnostic tests. Disease management is organized using the nursing process and includes health promotion, acute intervention, and ambulatory and home care.
Assessment:I recommend this textbook for use in various programs of nursing. It is also an excellent reference to have on each unit. The seventh edition includes updates on treatment and concepts from the previous edition.
