Description:This is the fifth edition of a medical microbiology textbook for second-year medical students. It first reviews the basic biology of infectious agents, then explains the immune response and how it protects the host. It then covers each organism in a systematic traditional fashion.
Purpose:The purpose is to prepare the medical student to start thinking like a physician. The intent of this book is very commendable in that it strives to integrate the biology of infectious agents with the disease.
Audience:This book is primarily used by the second-year medical student. The authors are well known in the field of medical microbiology and have taught medical students at all stages for many years. They have used their experience to produce a fine product.
Features:The entire field of medical microbiology is covered, from bacteriology to mycology, parasitology, and virology. The book comprehensively presents the clinical findings and laboratory diagnostic tests used to identify these agents. The authors have used innovative organization of each chapter to relay the relevant information. Important information is included in shaded boxes for a succinct summary. The pictures show the significant clinical presentation of disease as well as the morphology of infectious organism and results of relevant diagnostic tests. Pertinent clinical cases and questions are found at the conclusion of each chapter. An interesting and unique feature of this textbook is the online access to some interactive programs, which is one of the strongest attributesof this new edition. It provides practice tests and easy access to information.
Assessment:This book is very inclusive and works well for teaching second-year medical students about clinical infectious disease. It is a classic textbook and the new version has updated the information with new terminology and names of infectious agents. This is a rapidly progressing field of medicine and requires frequent updates. This edition includes online access to additional information. Medical students will enjoy this feature.

December 17, 2008: Good text for more detail regarding immunology. This is more than a review book. It is a good text for med school micro courses as well as USMLE Step 1 prep.
