Gr 1-3 Rancher Hicks leads a life so uneventful that he takes a trip to town just to see what is happening. Wife Elna stays home. While the rancher is amusing himself with the high life in Sleepy Gulchgetting his whiskers trimmed, having lunch at Millie Mildew's, and watching a turtle cross Main StreetElna is home winning contests, inheriting fortunes, starring in movies, and entertaining the President. Delightfully exaggerated, the happenings are contrasted spread by spread, switching back and forth from town to ranch with the phrase, ``Meanwhile, back at. . . .'' Double-page spreads accentuate the huge sky of the empty ranch, even after Elna's construction projects seem to fill the horizon. Ross places Elna and Rancher Hicks in a parody of an American Gothic pose that is filled with color and barely repressed merriment, wonderfully carrying out the wacky mood of Noble's tall tale. Rancher Hicks wears an expression of hilarious happiness while Elna accepts all that happens with breezy aplomb and regrets missing all the excitement in town. February 16, 2002: I've Loved this book ever since I was five, and after all of these years, I still laugh on just about every page. The first time I'd ever heard it was on Reading Rainbow. It's about a man who is trying to have fun, and thinks he has an exciting day, But Meanwhile back at the ranch his wife is having an even better more hilareous day.

December 13, 2001: Just the other month, my son, came home from his school to announce that he had a new favorite book.....and could he get it for Christmas? His school had invited the author to visit and before she was to arrive his class had listened to a teacher read this book. It was 'Meanwhile Back at the Ranch' He is now in 5th grade and said he would feel 'funny' about getting such a book since he thinks this book is for younger readers...I said, 'Nonsense!' If you love a book and it means something to you...you can certainly claim it to be a book you want to have, to read, to share and to enjoy...no matter how old you are! So, Today I am going to purchase it...and see that my son gets it on Christmas Day. The story has some wild and humorous situations, clever action, is beautifully illustrated and can help a child to enjoy and appreciate the things in life that he or she already has.
