Follow the complete metamorphosis of the mealworm as it starts from an egg. The molting during the larva stage is captured in one of the many color photographs of the mealworm. In the close-up snapshots of the pupa stage, the developing features of the adult mealworm are visible. The final stage shows the adult when it first emerges and later, once its exoskeleton hardens and darkens. In this book about the mealworm, the egg is the only image that is an illustration and not a photograph. The book is one of five in the "Watch It Grow" series that examines the life cycles of different insects. The books make a nice companion when observing the actual or live metamorphosis of not only the mealworm, but the pillbug, silkworm, painted lady butterfly, and milkweed bug, which are featured in the other four books in the series. The format and presentation are similar. Some children may require support with the informational text features and the content vocabulary. Reviewer: Carrie Hane Hung
