Synopsis

& The 5th edition of this comprehensive text features revised versions of each chapter, a rewritten section on genetics and prenatal diagnostic screening, and new chapters on congenital and acquired thrombophylic disorders, diagnosis and management of depressive/mood disorders and common psychoses, and statistical considerations in perinatal medicine. Topics of the 61 chapters include basic genetics, normal early development, and other fundamentals of perinatal biology; prenatal diagnosis and therapy of fetal disorders; maternal complications, (28 chapters) including preterm labor and delivery, pregnancy and not-pregnancy related diseases of each body system, and anesthetic considerations for complicated pregnancies; and identification and management of problems in the high-risk neonate. The 4th edition (1999) is recommended by Brandon-Hill for initial purchase. Annotation ©2003 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

This is an update to the previous edition published in 1994. The format remains essentially unchanged, and although the pages and print are bigger, the number of chapters is the same. The objective of this edition is met with timely updates to existing chapters and relevant attention paid to advances in molecular diagnosis, fetal infection, human immunodeficiency disease, and ultrasound. This book is targeted toward practitioners with particular interest in medical problems complicating pregnancy. Medical problems commonly and uncommonly encountered during pregnancy are covered, including all major systems. Important social issues regarding physical abuse, HIV, and illicit drug use are addressed, and advances in high resolution ultrasound, PUBS, and molecular diagnosis of genetic diseases are highlighted. This is a cornerstone text in the practice of this subspecialty. The credibility of the editors and contributors is noteworthy and without question. The range of topics covered, together with extensive reference lists, provides readers with a wealth of information and resources to answer day-to-day questions. At the same time, readers are prompted to further thought and inquiry into a field that is rapidly evolving. This book is more comprehensive than Gabbe's Obstetrics: Normal and Problem Pregnancies, 3rd Edition (Churchill Livingstone, 1996), yet easier to read than Gleicher's Principles and Practice of Medical Therapy in Pregnancy (Appleton & Lange, 1998). This fourth edition puts forth the best of the best in a stimulating, well-organized format that is sure to be appreciated.
