This is an update to the previous edition published in 1994. The format remains essentially unchanged, and although the pages and print are bigger, the number of chapters is the same. The objective of this edition is met with timely updates to existing chapters and relevant attention paid to advances in molecular diagnosis, fetal infection, human immunodeficiency disease, and ultrasound. This book is targeted toward practitioners with particular interest in medical problems complicating pregnancy. Medical problems commonly and uncommonly encountered during pregnancy are covered, including all major systems. Important social issues regarding physical abuse, HIV, and illicit drug use are addressed, and advances in high resolution ultrasound, PUBS, and molecular diagnosis of genetic diseases are highlighted. This is a cornerstone text in the practice of this subspecialty. The credibility of the editors and contributors is noteworthy and without question. This third edition covers the principles and pathophysiology of various medical conditions and their relationships with pregnancy. The purpose is to provide a review of normal physiology of pregnancy and the pathophysiologic alternations that occur in the presence of systemic maternal disease. The book's authors were successful in meeting their objectives. The authors are targeting medical students, residents, fellows, and practitioners in their objective. The book seems beyond the scope of what medical students would require, although the early chapters covering genetics, the placenta, and physiologic changes in pregnancy provide a valuable and understandable foundation for students at any career stage. The table of contents and index of the book are very helpful in locating information of a particular area of interest in a timely fashion. The illustrations, all in black-and-white, are numerous, helpful, and of sufficient quality. The ultrasound reproductions in chapter 14 are of little value, principally because their print quality is suboptimal. The bibliography is extensive, current, and easy to use in its alphabetical arrangement. Overall, this is a fine textbook that is thorough, easy to use, and current. The expanded sections and expansions in the treatment recommendations make this new edition an improvement over previous editions.
