February 08, 2008: Published by Barron?s Educational Series, Mastering Spanish, Level 2 is the continuation of Mastering Spanish, Level 1. Both programs were developed by the Foreign Service Institute in order to teach diplomats to speak Spanish fluently. This program is for advanced students and should not be used until you have completed Mastering Spanish Level 1. The method used in FSI material relies heavily on drilling and repetition. Mastering Spanish, Level 2 is one of the most difficult and time consuming programs out there, but it is an extremely effective tool for those who are seeking to master Spanish. Anyone who is seeking to learn enough Spanish to just get by will be frustrated by this material and should look elsewhere for home study programs. Personally, I am a fan of the Learning Spanish Like Crazy CD course and believe that this is a better place to start for beginners. Despite the emphasis on repetition, Mastering Spanish does not teach by rote. Students are forced to adjust to different verb forms and sentence structures on the fly so that they are able to apply their knowledge in a variety of situations that exist outside the learning program. I should also mention that the pronunciation system provided in the book is phonetically based. Some people dislike this, but I think it works just fine. I have an entire library full of Spanish language teaching materials. The bottom line is that Mastering Spanish, Level 2 is demanding but ultimately useful and fulfilling. Buy this program if you are gung-ho about learning Spanish.
